In order to meet water demand—projected to be one of the greatest challenges of the future—we at Limak Çimento aim to activate early precautionary mechanisms. At all our facilities with high water consumption, in addition to reducing unit water consumption, we continue our preparations with roadmaps that anticipate alternative water pathways and the technologies of the future. With the support of senior management, we carry out projects to ensure that the awareness level of all units is at the highest possible level.
All our integrated cement plants have brought water management into a corporate discipline and earned the ISO 46001 Water Efficiency Management System Certificate. With this certificate, Limak Çimento holds the title of the first and only company in the Turkish cement sector to certify water management at this standard.
The most striking evidence of our operational excellence is our specific water consumption figures. The water consumption we have achieved at our Şanlıurfa plant is considerably below the general averages in the sector. These data prove that Limak Çimento operates one of the facilities with the lowest water intensity not only in Türkiye but also on a global scale. Our Future Vision is to extend our digital monitoring network to all our Group plants, thereby optimizing "closed-loop" water use systems and reducing the effects of water stress on the ecosystem to zero.
At Limak Çimento, we are expanding the ISO 14046 water footprint calculation and verification work launched at our integrated cement plants in 2022. Our verifications are continuing at all our facilities, including our cement plants in Türkiye and Africa, our AAC (autoclaved aerated concrete) plants, and our ready-mix concrete facilities.
Within the scope of reducing the amount of water withdrawn from groundwater, work has begun at our integrated cement plants equipped with domestic wastewater treatment facilities to recover water into the process using advanced treatment technology; this will be commissioned at our Şanlıurfa plant next year, after which domestic wastewater recovery efforts will begin at all our plants. The aim is, as a priority, to meet 10% of total water consumption through domestic wastewater treatment and recovery.
