An important pillar of our sustainability strategy is reducing natural resource consumption by increasing the use of alternative raw materials. Through the use of alternative raw materials, we lower carbon emissions and improve resource efficiency. Within the scope of the industrial symbiosis projects we carry out with other industrial enterprises, we use the waste produced by facilities from different sectors (bottom ash, fly ash, marble waste, foundry sand, etc.) as alternative raw materials in our plants. In this way, we both make use of waste and reduce our consumption of natural resources.
These materials, obtained from recycling processes, contribute to achieving our circular economy goals. Thus, by reducing our dependence on natural resources, we create a sustainable production cycle. As shown below, in our 2050 Decarbonization Roadmap we plan to increase the use of alternative raw materials gradually, year over year.
For the first time in Türkiye, we successfully produced low-carbon cement from construction and demolition waste in accordance with the EN 197-6 standard. With our project for the disposal of "Construction and Demolition Waste" (CDW) arising from urban transformation works and earthquakes, we took an important step toward the circular economy. Following the conclusion of the product development studies carried out by the LCTO R&D Center since 2018, we gave the green light to production.
In line with our strategy to reduce the clinker usage ratio, we are expanding the use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) and alternative binders in cement. In this context, we contribute to the conservation of natural resources by utilizing calcined clay, carbonated minerals, and various pozzolanic materials as alternative raw materials.
Through the use of alternative raw materials and SCMs, we aim both to reduce carbon emissions and to improve resource efficiency. In this way, by reducing our dependence on natural resources, we create a more sustainable production cycle. We aim to systematically reduce the clinker ratio in cement content through calcined clay, carbonated minerals, and other pozzolanic materials, thereby increasing the use of alternative binders. In line with our investments and product development activities supporting this approach, we aim to reduce our clinker-related emissions intensity (kg CO₂ per ton of cementitious product) by at least 25% by 2050.
